Curtains add a level of softness that blinds cannot, making a room feel warmer and more finished. For the best result, we recommend installing them high and allowing them to fall to the floor.

It is also important to plan enough space beside the window for the curtains to stack back. This prevents them from covering too much glass and reducing natural light.

Sheer curtains

Sheer curtains soften natural light and bring movement, texture and warmth to a room without making it feel dark or enclosed.

They work particularly well across large windows and sliding doors, where they can create a relaxed, elegant finish. When installed from ceiling to floor, sheers can also make a room feel taller and help disguise uneven window heights or frames.

Sheers offer useful daytime privacy, but they usually need to be paired with another treatment for nighttime privacy or full light control. A sheer curtain layered with a blackout blind is one of our favourite combinations because it gives you flexibility throughout the day without adding too much bulk.

Roman blinds

Roman blinds provide the practicality of a blind with the softness of fabric.

When raised, the fabric folds neatly at the top of the window, creating a tailored and decorative finish. They are a lovely choice for bedrooms, studies, dining rooms and smaller windows where full-length curtains may feel too heavy.

Roman blinds also give you more freedom with fabric. They can be made in a simple linen, a textured neutral or a patterned design that adds colour and personality.

The main consideration is that the folded fabric covers part of the glass when the blind is open. This should be taken into account in rooms where natural light is already limited.

Roller blinds

Roller blinds are a clean, practical choice, especially in modern homes or rooms where space is limited.

They are available in sunscreen, light-filtering and blackout fabrics. Sunscreen blinds reduce glare and provide daytime privacy while still allowing some view through. Light-filtering options soften natural light, while blackout fabrics are better suited to bedrooms and media rooms.

Because roller blinds sit neatly within or above the window frame, they do not require the wall space that curtains need. This makes them useful in kitchens, smaller rooms and spaces where furniture sits close to the window.

Motorisation is also worth considering for large, high or hard-to-reach windows. It creates a streamlined look and makes it easy to control several blinds at once.

Shutters

Shutters are durable, easy to maintain and excellent for controlling privacy and light.

Their adjustable louvres allow you to direct light into the room while limiting visibility from outside. This makes them particularly useful in bathrooms, street-facing bedrooms and living rooms.

Because shutters fit neatly into the window opening, they do not take up floor space or require fabric to stack beside the window. They are also easy to wipe clean and can help improve insulation.

Shutters generally require a higher initial investment, but they are long-lasting and create a strong, architectural finish both inside and outside the home.

Layering window treatments

Sometimes the best solution is a combination of two treatments.

Sheers can soften daylight while a blackout blind provides privacy at night. Curtains can be paired with roller blinds for extra insulation, and Roman blinds can be layered with decorative curtains to add warmth and texture.

Layering allows each treatment to perform a different role, but the tracks, headings, colours and materials need to be considered together so the finished result feels cohesive.
